Fugro Synergy is a new lightweight drillship which was delivered from Bergen Yards Halsnoy, Norway in August. She received her Safety Case from HSE in May so is able to start drilling in the UKCS almost immediately. As Seabrokers reported recently in its latest monthly report, Synergy has already been contracted by operators, both large and small for various drilling campaigns and will spend the rest of 2009 drilling in the North Sea before heading off to the Far East for a longer drilling campaign for a US/Australian operator.
Fugro Well Services realised that there was a large potential demand for smaller, cost effective drilling units which could target shallower wells along with top hole section of deeper wells – and the Synergy concept was born.
These units could be employed in all pre-drilling operations and thus take the simple tasks off any project critical path and away from the expensive MODUs. Typical scopes of work include top hole drilling, installing conductor and surface casing
(sometimes intermediate casings), installation of subsea templates, pilot hole drilling, Leak Off Tests (LOT) and Formation Integrity Testing (FITs) to optimise well design, construction work, pulling and connecting flowlines, running Xmas trees and well abandonment services.
The owners summarise that the work can perhaps best be described as de-risking of the well site prior to the utilisation of any MODU.
The Fugro Synergy drills riserless using pumped recovery technology. This technology has the added advantage of extending casing shoe depths for eliminating strings of casing. The combination of the Synergy and the pumped recovery system provides a most cost efficient method of drilling.
